This week we’re devoted to bringing you the best in Deaf film – we’ve tried to choose movies and series that were written, directed, produced or acted in by people who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing.

See What I’m Saying: The Deaf Entertainers Documentary

This heartfelt documentary follows four well-known entertainers in the Deaf community: a comic, a drummer, an actor and a singer as they attempt to cross over and reach mainstream audiences. These uniquely talented deaf entertainers of various disciplines overcome great challenges on their way to personal triumphs and professional success.

R.E.M. Films’
Deaf Night at the Movies

Acted and created by a team of over 60 members of the Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and Hearing communities.

You & Me

A deaf woman and a recently blinded man begin a tentative romance.

Deaf U

In this reality series, a tight-knit group of Deaf and hard of hearing students share their stories and explore life at Gallaudet University.

Honorable Mentions

Usually we try to stick to movies you can stream via subscription services you probably already have, but this week we have two picks that aren’t available for streaming without incurring additional rental fees. However, we feel that for the minor cost (of which we do NOT receive a cut), these films are worth watching.

No Ordinary Hero: The SuperDeafy Movie

Tony Kane is a deaf actor who plays a superhero on TV. Eight-year-old Jacob, also deaf, is torn between different ideas of what “normal” is. When Tony and Jacob’s paths cross, they inspire belief in each other and in themselves.

Universal Signs

After his fiancée’s daughter dies while in his care, a deaf man shuts himself off from the world. Haunted by memories, it is only through new friendship that he can learn to forgive, love, and reconnect.

What We’re Looking Forward To

Post-pandemic, keep an eye out for Eternals, featuring MCU’s first deaf superhero – played by Tony award nominee Lauren Ridloff.
